There are several approaches to this work.  Like everything else in life, each of us must find the one that works for us.  All change starts with one small step, awareness.  All it takes to be aware is to ask yourself, what works, what doesn’t and what do I want instead.  I challenge you to take that first step and enjoy the ride.  It is highly likely that, next year at this time, you will be a much more fulfilled and happier person.  So, I will say again Happy 2015, what’s in it for you?

watershed definition

Watershed definition: A ridge of high land dividing two areas that are drained by different river systems. On one side of a watershed, rivers and streams flow in one direction; on the other side they flow in another direction. Also, the area drained by a water system.
Note : By extension, a “watershed” is a critical point that serves as a dividing line: “The 1989 Council on Legislation vote to admit women into Rotary clubs worldwide remains a watershed moment in the history of Rotary.”  or  ”The parties reached a watershed in the contract negotiations.”

New members

 INCREASE YOUR MEMBERSHIP

The Absolutely Positively Guaranteed Plan to Increase Your Membership by 25% over Three Years

(Maybe … Probably … You’ve Got a Decent Shot)

Use ideas from various Rotary sources and brainstorm others to come up with three ideas you are not currently doing or doing well.

I chose:

1. Hold special membership drives (wine & cheese parties, meet & greet).
2. Ask new members to cultivate one potential member.
3. Give the New Members Committee $500 to do a service project.

Assume a club of 100 to make it easy to do the math. But it can work with a 10 person club or 250 person club.

Every year a typical club loses 10% of its members. So, your 10 person club will shrink to 90.

Assuming your club normally stays about the same size every year, your normal growth balances out your 10% loss so that at the end of the year you have also gotten 10 new members. So, you stay at 100. If you shrink more than 10% every year, it will take longer than three years to increase your club membership by 25%. If you shrink less, it will take less time.

In the first year, you will have quarterly special membership gatherings. You ask your club members to bring a potential new member let’s say to a wine & cheese party. Assuming the 80/2270 rule, 20% of the members do 80% of the work, 20 members will bring 20 prospective members. It seems reasonable to assume that out of the 20 prospective members, you will get at least one new member, or 5+%.
You do that four times a year, you have 104 members.

By giving the New Member Committee $500 for a service project, you encourage engagement. We can assume this will improve retention by 1% in club membership. That means that you will not lose at least one member you would have lost previously. You are now up to 105 members.

You ask each new member to cultivate one potential new member. You have 14 new members: 10 come in the normal way; four come in through parties. Assume 25% of these 14 cultivated potential members actually become members. That’s an additional 3.5 members. You are up to a 108.5 club membership.

That is an 8.5% increase. You do that over three years and you have 25.5% increase in membership for your club.

Rotary club of Dauarte, california

The Rotary Club of Duarte, California, USA, admits women as members in violation of the RI Constitution and Standard Rotary Club Constitution. Because of this violation, the club’s membership in Rotary International is terminated in March 1978. (The club was reinstated in September 1986.)Mar 28, 2014

The 1989 Council on Legislation vote to admit women into Rotary clubs worldwide remains a watershed moment in the history of Rotary.

“My fellow delegates, I would like to remind you that the world of 1989 is very different to the world of 1905. I sincerely believe that Rotary has to adapt itself to a changing world,” said Frank J. Devlyn, who would go on to become RI president in 2000-01.
